Newark Terminal A receives $110 million for two expansion tracks
The authorization funds a southern extension and planning for a separate six-gate northern expansion.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has authorized $110 million toward two expansions at Newark Liberty International Airport’s Terminal A. The decision pairs a funded southern construction program with an earlier planning step for the north side.
Of that authorization, $100 million covers design and construction of a 25,000-square-foot southern extension. It will add two common-use gates, seating, restrooms and concession space. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with completion planned for 2029.
The other $10 million supports planning for a northern expansion expected to include six additional common-use gates. Cost estimates and phasing still need development ahead of a further anticipated authorization in 2027. The agency envisages phased openings from 2030 to 2032.
Terminal A handled approximately 18 million passengers in 2024, nearly 40 percent above its original forecast, according to the authority.
The two funding decisions should be read separately. Planning money establishes a path to a decision; it does not establish the final construction budget. For designers and contractors, the northern work is therefore a developing pipeline rather than a fully funded build.
The broader delivery challenge is expansion within a working terminal. Gate availability, passenger circulation and the timing of connections to existing facilities will matter alongside the added floor area.
