FY2025–2026 Railroad Crossing Elimination

The Federal Railroad Administration selected 91 projects across 37 states for $1.24 billion through the fiscal 2025–2026 Railroad Crossing Elimination program, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced October 30.

The portfolio mixes construction and earlier-stage work. A $46 million Texas award supports an RM 2871 overpass over Union Pacific tracks and Aledo Road in Fort Worth. Nampa, Idaho, is slated for $43 million toward the Robinson Road and Greenhurst Road overpass project, while Kansas City’s port authority is set to receive $72 million for a grade separation that would remove three crossings.

Other selections remain in development. Marana, Arizona, is slated for $6.4 million to advance environmental review and preliminary design for a future Tangerine Road grade separation, and St. Louis County, Minnesota, would receive $1.7 million to evaluate four crossings along a Canadian National corridor.

The award announcement is not a single open bid. Each recipient will move on its own schedule through agreements, design, environmental review and procurement. The selected federal amount also should not be treated as the combined total cost of all 91 projects.

What happens next

USDOT announces no common construction or procurement date; recipients will advance separately through grant agreements, design, environmental review and contracting.

Why it matters for the industry

The selections create a national pipeline of grade separations, crossing closures, signal work and planning assignments, but a grant selection is not an open solicitation and the federal award total is not the combined capital cost.
