New York Breaks Ground on $185 Million Port Richmond Wastewater Upgrade

New York City started a US$185 million design-build modernization of the Port Richmond wastewater facility, with completion expected in summer 2029.

New York City broke ground October 21 on a US$185 million modernization of the Port Richmond Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility on Staten Island. The facility serves roughly 200,000 residents across a 9,665-acre drainage area and can treat 60 million gallons per day.

The design-build project will replace electrical distribution equipment and upgrade mechanical rooms, the control room, offices and locker rooms. Flood-resilience work includes reinforced walls, raised windowsills and deployable barriers. The city expects completion in summer 2029 and says the design-build approach will deliver the work in under four years—about 40% faster than a conventional sequence.

The new contract is separate from US$279 million of other ongoing wastewater-treatment upgrades at Port Richmond. The official announcement identifies the project value and milestone, but procurement packages beyond the design-build contract and downstream supplier opportunities should be confirmed through current NYC procurement notices.
