Airo’s Cascades debut moves Amtrak’s fleet program into daily service
Two Airo trainsets entered Amtrak Cascades service September 30, shifting the fleet program from testing to passenger operations.

Infraday Coverage · Rail & Transit
Amtrak introduced its first Airo trains into passenger service on September 30, with two trainsets operating four daily trips on the Amtrak Cascades corridor. The launch connects a national fleet modernization program to daily operations in the Pacific Northwest.
The initial deployment serves trips along the Vancouver, B.C., Seattle, Portland and Eugene corridor. Amtrak has ordered eight Cascades trainsets, with additional equipment expected to enter service through early 2027 and replace the existing fleet.
The rollout continues beyond opening day
Manufactured by Siemens Mobility in the United States, the trains incorporate components from nearly 100 suppliers across 31 states. Each Cascades trainset has more than 300 seats, with updated passenger information displays, connectivity and accessibility features.
Amtrak identifies Northeast Regional as the next planned Airo deployment, with service targeted for late 2027. That remains a planned milestone rather than a completed rollout.
Why infrastructure owners should pay attention
Infraday perspective: A fleet launch is also an operating-system handover. Owners have to connect the equipment investment to maintenance routines, staff readiness, spare parts and the infrastructure that supports reliable daily service.
For other rail programs, the useful question is how that handover is managed as more vehicles arrive. A phased introduction can give operators time to resolve issues, but it also requires clear responsibility for keeping legacy and new equipment available during the transition.
What to watch
Track the pace of subsequent deliveries and the operating performance of the initial trains. The strongest measure of the investment will be dependable service over time, alongside the passenger improvements visible on day one.
