FRA Obligates $550 Million for North Carolina’s S-Line Rail Program
The Federal Railroad Administration has obligated $550 million for development of the S-Line passenger rail route between Raleigh and Richmond, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced October 15.

The funding supports track repairs and upgrades. Federal officials describe a future journey-time reduction of up to 90 minutes, together with greater reliability and room for more passenger and freight movements. The obligation is a funding milestone, not the opening of the new service.
North Carolina officials marked the announcement at the Durant Road grade-separation project. The state expects bridge completion in November 2026 and final restoration in July 2028; those dates apply to that project, not the entire Raleigh–Richmond corridor.
DOT separately identified a $300 million Piedmont Corridor safety investment covering crossing closures, grade separations and trespass prevention. It should not be combined with the $550 million as if both amounts fund the same S-Line package.
