DOE Plans Up to $150 Million for Alaska’s Beluga–Healy Transmission Line

The proposed 223-mile route has a preliminary $418 million plan combining intended federal support with nonfederal contributions.

Infrastructure and the built environment

The Department of Energy announced its intent on October 5, 2026, to provide up to $150 million in Defense Production Act support for an Alaska Railbelt transmission project. The proposed line would connect Beluga and Healy, creating a second route between Southcentral and Interior Alaska.

The preliminary planning estimate totals $418 million, including $268 million in nonfederal contributions. DOE says the project would support energy reliability for communities and military installations along the Railbelt.

Key details

  • Scale: Approximately 223 miles of new transmission.
  • Federal support: Up to $150 million is an announced funding intention, rather than confirmation that construction funds have been disbursed.
  • Budget: The $418 million figure is a preliminary planning estimate.

Next steps

Transmission engineers, equipment vendors and affected communities should follow the project’s design, permitting and procurement milestones. Before allocating bid resources, establish which organization will procure each package, whether a solicitation has been issued and how federal funding conditions affect the schedule.
