Ford Plans a $1 Billion Paint Shop to Modernize Kentucky Truck Plant

The planned replacement paint shop adds another major industrial project to Ford’s Kentucky footprint, with groundbreaking expected later in 2026.

Infrastructure and the built environment

Ford announced plans in September 2026 for a $1 billion paint shop at Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville. The new facility will replace the plant’s existing paint shop, with groundbreaking expected later in the year.

Kentucky Truck Plant is Ford’s largest and highest-revenue U.S. manufacturing plant. It produces F-Series Super Duty pickups, the Ford Expedition and the Lincoln Navigator.

Ford says the upgraded paint technology is intended to improve efficiency, paint quality and environmental performance. The announcement describes a planned investment and expected groundbreaking, rather than a completed facility.

Modernization inside an established production campus

Analysis: A major replacement facility at an operating industrial site raises delivery questions that differ from an undeveloped-site project. The construction plan needs to connect new assets with the existing campus and the eventual transition into production.

For project partners, the important details will be the procurement packages, utility interfaces and commissioning sequence. Those will show how much of the investment relates to building work, process equipment and supporting systems.

Owners evaluating similar upgrades should also distinguish announced benefits from results demonstrated after startup. Efficiency and quality objectives become more useful when they are linked to a measurable operating baseline and acceptance criteria.

What to watch

The next milestone is the expected groundbreaking, followed by a clearer construction and equipment installation schedule. The project will be most informative as a modernization case when Ford explains how the new paint shop reaches production readiness and how its performance compares with the facility it replaces.
