Constellation and Amazon have announced a 20-year power purchase agreement for 690 megawatts from Maryland’s Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant. The September 30 announcement includes 190 megawatts of planned additional output expected between 2030 and 2032.
Constellation says the agreement supports more than $3 billion in investment at the approximately 1,790-megawatt plant. Power will continue to flow through the PJM grid rather than a dedicated connection removing the facility from the regional system.
The company also links the investment to seeking an additional 20 years of operating life. The agreement is not itself a license extension or proof that all planned upgrades have received regulatory approvals.
Infraday analysis
Long-term power commitments can help support investment in existing nuclear assets, but output increases still require engineering, outage planning and regulatory work. The agreement makes Calvert Cliffs a significant project to follow for equipment renewal and plant modifications. The schedule and approvals for the proposed uprate will establish when the additional capacity can become an operating resource.
