Sagamore Bridge replacement moves into final procurement phase
Massachusetts says $956 million in federal bridge funding has been obligated as the Sagamore replacement moves toward design-build procurement.

The Sagamore Bridge replacement is moving deeper into procurement after Massachusetts announced that $956 million in federal Bridge Investment Program funding has been obligated for the Cape Cod crossing.
MassDOT has been advancing a design-build procurement for the project, which will replace the existing Sagamore Bridge and improve connections to the surrounding roadway network. State planning documents call for twin arch structures that separate traffic by direction and allow construction to be staged while maintaining traffic across the Cape Cod Canal.
The replacement is one of the largest transportation programs underway in Massachusetts and a critical link between Cape Cod and the mainland.
Procurement is the next major test
The project is now shifting from planning and environmental work toward the delivery decisions that will determine schedule, phasing and construction risk.
MassDOT previously said it expects to select a design-build team and issue notice to proceed by late 2027, with construction beginning in the winter of 2027-2028. That puts the coming procurement period at the center of the project’s near-term timeline.
For contractors and major-project teams, the challenge is larger than the bridge structure itself. The work has to account for traffic operations, marine navigation, approach roads, utilities, environmental requirements and the logistics of delivering a major crossing in an active transportation corridor.
Why the project matters
The Sagamore and Bourne bridges are both aging assets with regional economic importance. The Sagamore replacement is the first major construction step in a broader Cape Cod Bridges program that will ultimately reshape how traffic moves across the canal.
The project will also be an important test of how Massachusetts manages large design-build delivery, federal funding requirements and construction staging on a heavily used route.
