Connecticut River Bridge work puts a year of single-track operations on the calendar

Amtrak’s current project schedule calls for single-track operations from November 2026 through November 2027 as construction advances beside the existing bridge.

The Connecticut River Bridge replacement is approaching a construction phase that will directly affect operations on the Northeast Corridor. Amtrak’s current project page lists single-track operations from November 2026 through November 2027 to support work close to the existing crossing.

A September 22 video update highlighted progress since the project broke ground in 2024. The crossing links Old Saybrook and Old Lyme and carries Amtrak, Shore Line East and freight service.

Building beside an operating railroad

Amtrak says the single-track period will support pile driving, cofferdams and retaining-wall construction near the existing structure and tracks. O&G/Tutor Perini is the prime construction joint venture.

The replacement is a two-track, electrified movable bridge with new track, signals, catenary, power and communications systems. Its design supports train speeds up to 70 mph, compared with the existing bridge’s 45 mph maximum.

The schedule needs a current reference

Amtrak’s current project page lists estimated construction completion in 2031. That is the schedule reference owners, suppliers and regional stakeholders should use when evaluating the overall construction program.

Infraday perspective: Major rail bridge delivery depends on the space and time available to build while trains keep moving. A constrained work window can shape construction sequencing as strongly as the structural design.

For owners managing similar replacements, the practical lesson is to make operating restrictions part of the delivery plan early. Construction milestones, rail capacity and public communications need to be coordinated so a field change does not become an unexpected service disruption.

What to watch

Watch for further operating notices ahead of November and for updates to the construction sequence. The published single-track window is a project planning milestone; travelers should consult operator service notices for specific timetable changes.
