FHWA Directs $873 Million to Western North Carolina Helene Repairs
A new FHWA emergency-relief allocation supports continued road, bridge and transportation repairs after Hurricane Helene.
The Federal Highway Administration announced US$873 million in emergency-relief funding on October 20 for continued road, bridge and transportation-infrastructure repairs in western North Carolina following Hurricane Helene.
FHWA said the allocation is part of a US$1.6 billion nationwide emergency-relief package. It reported that the 2024 storm damaged more than 9,000 sites and caused over 1,400 road closures in North Carolina. Across all Helene-affected states, FHWA now reports US$3.4 billion invested, including US$2.9 billion in North Carolina.
The announcement identifies a statewide recovery allocation rather than a list of newly awarded construction contracts. Project-level scopes, schedules and contractors will depend on state and local delivery actions. The Emergency Relief Program reimburses eligible repairs following major disasters and extreme-weather events.
