Gary’s $24.5 million water-main project reaches substantial completion

Indiana American Water replaced roughly 10,000 feet of aging main and more than 100 lead service lines; a final Borman Park connection remains.

Infrastructure and the built environment

Indiana American Water said on October 6 that its $24.5 million water-main project in Gary, Indiana, is substantially complete. A final connection at the Borman Park Water Treatment Plant remains. The company’s announcement follows approximately four years of construction to replace transmission and distribution pipes that had experienced frequent breaks and service disruptions.

The work installed approximately 10,000 feet of main: 6,000 feet of transmission pipe and 4,000 feet of distribution pipe serving neighborhood connections. New 24-inch to 36-inch mains replaced 16-inch and 20-inch pipes that were more than 70 years old. The company also reported replacing more than 100 lead service lines and identified Rex Construction as the primary contractor.

Indiana American Water says the larger mains improve water flow and fire-flow capacity while supporting industrial and commercial customers across Northwest Indiana. Next step: Complete the remaining Borman Park connection. The announcement does not give a date for that work.
