Microsoft’s June update reported that its first Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, data center facility was fully operational after equipment startup activities began in April.
The company reported nearly 550 full-time workers supporting the first facility and said construction of an adjacent second facility was ongoing, with completion scheduled for 2028. Those statements describe different delivery stages within the same campus.
Campus progress needs facility-level reporting
A large campus can contain an operating building, a construction site and land reserved for later phases. Combining those stages into a single headline can make the investment look more complete than the evidence supports.
Infraday perspective: Owners should report completion and operating readiness at the level of the facility or system being discussed. This makes it easier for customers, utilities and local governments to understand what capacity is available and what remains dependent on future work.
The same discipline applies to workforce reporting. Construction participation over several years and the number of ongoing employees answer different questions. Public updates become more useful when they retain those distinctions and explain the milestones ahead.
What to watch
Use the June announcement as a dated milestone, then follow later updates for the second facility’s progress. A reported operating first facility does not establish completion of the entire campus.
